Ottawa Children's Theatre

In-Person classes, Winter 2022

Information for Parents and Students

*** Please Note: Our studio space is owned by Carleton University, and we are following all of their Covid regulations and protocols. Anyone in the building is required to wear a mask at all times. Anyone who is 12 years or older must present proof of double vaccination upon entry. Any students ages 5-11 must have received their first dose by the time we return to in-person classes on February 12, 2022, and their second dose by March 1, 2022.

Although it is impossible to eliminate risk entirely, we have taken rigorous measures to reduce the possibility of COVID transmission.

  • There is a reduced number of students in each studio, allowing for more space for each class to happen safely. This included the “waiting room”.

  • Class start times are staggered by 30 minutes to minimize traffic in the hallways & lobby

  • There are 15 minutes between classes for the studio to clear and for our staff to sanitize surfaces

  • Teaching assistants will serve as “Safety Ambassador” for classes to help ensure protocols are being followed.

  • All instructors and teaching assistants are double-vaccinated.

  • All instructors, assistants and staff will have completed training protocols (proper mask wearing, required screening prior to entry to class, proper sanitization procedures, etc.)

  • There will be designated “waiting room” where students can wait until their instructor brings them to their studio

  • There is signage in place throughout the building: room capacities, unidirectional travel if needed, and sanitization reminders

  • Staff will ask Health Screening questions and request Contact Tracing information upon entry to Carleton University/Dominion Chalmers

  • In our teaching, instructors will select creative teaching materials that require less contact, such as scenes with fewer actors and ensemble work with no physical contact. None of this will minimize the learning or the joy of playing together once more.

Please abide by the following rules and conditions:

  • If you or your child is sick, please don’t come to class. Contact OCT to let them know. If you think your child may have been exposed to COVID-19, please get a test. Notify OCT immediately if they test positive.

  • Each student should have with them two masks/face coverings – one to wear and one as  back up

  • Students may bring the following to class: pencil, a personalized folder with class materials (scripts, poems, etc.), water bottle, rehearsal/indoor shoes. Scripts will not be shared.

Please note: There will be an information session for all students on the first day to go over safety protocols.

  • Enter the building from the Lisgar Street doors only

  • Maintain physical distancing while in the parking lot. Payment for parking is still required

  • Please enter the building no more than 10 minutes prior to when the student’s class begins

  • Unless notified otherwise, we ask parents to drop off students in the downstairs lobby, where OCT staff will ask the necessary health screening questions*, then usher the students upstairs to the “waiting room”

  • Upon entering the building, students will be able to use hand sanitizer before proceeding upstairs to class. Instructors will encourage students to maintain hygiene measures washing/sanitizing). There will be a washroom/hand washing break per hour of class

  • All spaces not used as class studios are inaccessible

  • Maintain 2m physical distancing when in class, moving through the halls and going to the washroom. Staff will remind students to be cautious about coughing, yelling, etc., when in proximity to others.

  • Remove outside coats/boots/shoes in the hallway and place them in the designated areas

  • Place your personal belongings in one of the designated area along the back or side wall of the studio

  • No food or beverage other than bottled water are permitted in the studios

Health Screening Questions (upon entry to the building):

2) Have you travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days?

3) Have you been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID in the last 14 days?

If you answer “yes” to any of the above, please do not enter the building.
